If you have Medicare, Medicaid, or other government-funded prescription coverage, manufacturer copay cards generally cannot be used when a prescription is paid in whole or in part by a federal or state healthcare program. Other assistance may still be available.

Independent charitable foundations are an important place to check. Each organization sets its own covered diagnoses, medications, insurance requirements and financial eligibility rules.

Fund availability changes frequently. Check the official organization directly for current availability and confirm that your diagnosis and prescribed treatment are covered.

Requirements differ, but it can help to have your diagnosis, prescribing clinician’s information, medication name, insurance information, household-income information and contact details available. Some programs may request additional documentation.

Application time, income limits, payment methods and documentation deadlines are not universal. Follow the instructions for the specific program you are applying to.

Even when a manufacturer copay card is not available, the medication’s support program may help with benefits questions, referrals to independent foundations, or other assistance for eligible patients.

If a specialty medication has an unaffordable out-of-pocket cost, tell the specialty pharmacy and your healthcare team. Ask whether a benefits specialist, patient advocate, social worker or financial navigator can help identify current assistance.
